Don Draper, the legendary and fictional ad man from the wildly successful American TV series Mad Men, is famous for his reckless lifestyle as well as his brilliance as a Madison Avenue advertising executive.
Throughout the 7 seasons, Draper was responsible for some of the best quotes of the series. It demonstrated Drapers deep understanding of his craft.
I have listed below my favourite 5 Don Draper quotes from all 7 seasons, I have also spent some time thinking about how these quotes relate to business in the modern context.
“People want to be told what to do so badly that they’ll listen to anybody” – make yourself the person who people want to listen to. Marketing is no longer about interrupting people with your messages, it is now all about helping your clients make better buying decisions. Do this by showcasing your skills and expertise.
“If you don’t like what is being said, change the conversation” – You clients and your potential clients will have a very well defined view of your company. They will have their own inner monologue that describes your company. You may have had very little to do with that monologue, it may even be wrong. Marketing is such an important tool to help your clients and potential clients understand your company. Marketing is the tool by which you can shape that monologue.
“What you call love was invented by guys like me to sell nylons” – what are you really marketing? What are you really selling? You never just sell a product – you sell what it means to the customer. You are selling feelings and emotions.

Teddy told me that in Greek nostalgia literally means “the pain from an old wound.” It’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone” – shared value and shared experiences create a connection with your audience. It lets your audience know you understand them; you have a real sense of empathy. Empathy is a huge asset when it comes time to persuade and sell. Show your audience that you understand their hopes, their dreams, their fears and so on.
“Change is neither good nor bad, it simply is” – Your market will change, new products will come into the market, new competitors and other factors will change it. These changes are constant and a “feature” of any market your business participates in. Getting caught up in the good or bad of change is unnecessary expenditure of energy – change is neither good nor bad, it simply is.
